According to a report by Notch Consulting Inc., German engineering carbon company Orion Engineered Carbons announced plans to invest 12.8 million euros to further develop and explore an alternative method for climate-neutral production of carbon black, replacing traditional furnace and specialty carbon black production methods. Half of the funding for this new project, totaling 6.4 million euros, will be provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany and the NextGenerationEU foundation of the European Union. The research and development project is named the "Clean Carbon Black R&D Project" and will be conducted in a new research department at Orion Engineered Carbons' innovation center headquarters in Cologne, Germany.
The technology aims to increase the yield and efficiency of carbon black production using recycled materials at Orion Engineered Carbons, thereby significantly reducing the process's carbon footprint. The company states that this research project has the potential to drive carbon black production towards a circular economy direction and meet the growing demand for sustainable materials in the tire industry. Mr. Corning Painter, CEO of Orion Engineered Carbons, stated in a press release, "The goal of the Clean Carbon Black R&D Project is to develop methods to reduce carbon footprint, increase yield and efficiency, thereby lowering material costs. This technological breakthrough in an increasingly important field may have a significant impact on energy integration and the molecular-level recycling of waste tires."
