As reported by Rubber & Plastics News, Continental Carbon Co. (CCC), a subsidiary of Taiwan's China Synthetic Rubber Corporation (CSRC), has announced that its plants in Phenix City, Alabama, and Sunray, Texas, have recently obtained ISCC Plus certification. This certification was announced on August 20, with CCC stating, "This certification once again demonstrates our commitment to improving the environmental footprint of our products and supporting our customers' sustainability goals. This achievement marks further progress in our sustainability efforts, particularly in light of our recent announcement of a new joint venture."
The Phenix City facility has been the production base for CCC's tire tread-grade carbon black since the early 1980s but will be closed in December 2023. In May of this year, CCC partnered with Eco Infinic Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Taiwan's Sheico Group, to jointly build a waste tire recycling carbon black (rCB) plant at the former Phenix facility, which is expected to begin operations in 2026. According to CSRC, this new plant will be one of the largest tire pyrolysis facilities in North America, with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons of rCB, 35,000 tons of tire pyrolysis oil (TPO), and 2,300 tons of steel wire.
